This information is an overview of the laws, restrictions and entitlements that affect visitors to Canada and seasonal residents.

Visiting Canada Once you arrive: An officer will ask you a few short questions when you arrive.
To make this go quickly, keep your passport with you and not in your luggage.
The officer will stamp your passport or advise you how long you may stay in Canada.
Feel free to ask questions if you are unsure about anything.
After you arrive, you may want to change the conditions of your visit.
This is possible in special cases.
Canada does not pay for hospital or medical services for visitors.
Make sure you have health insurance to pay your medical costs before you leave for Canada.
You may not be permitted to enter Canada if you have a criminal conviction, including a conviction for driving while impaired.

International visitors to Canada (not U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents) must carry a valid passport and visa, if required.
Citizens from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Mexico, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia and others do not require a visa to enter Canada.
U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents:

American citizens and permanent residents do not require a passport or visa to enter Canada.
All you need are travel documents proving identity and proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.
Acceptable documents include photo identification, such as a valid driver's license, plus a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or green card.
If you are travelling with children under 18 years of age, you should carry identification for each child such as a birth certificate or green card.
Children travelling without their parents, with one parent, or with guardians, should carry written permission.

Beginning January 23, 2007,
The U.S. government will be requiring that each U.S. citizen and permanent resident leaving the country or returning to the United States by air must carry a valid U.S. passport or other secure travel document such as a NEXUS Air card when used at a NEXUS Air kiosk.
The second phase, which will affect all other modes of travel including land and sea, will not come into effect for at least another year.
The U.S. Congress passed an amendment granting permission to delay the implementation of the WHTI for traveling by land and sea until as late as June 1, 2009.
This means that the WHTI could be fully implemented before June 1, 2009.

1. Do you need a passport to enter Canada?
American citizens and permanent residents do not require a passport or visa to enter Canada.
All you need are travel documents proving identity and U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.
Acceptable documents include photo identification, such as a valid driver's license plus a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship, or a green card.
If you are travelling with children, you should carry identification for each child under 18 years old.
2. What are the requirements for children entering Canada?
If you are travelling with children, you must carry identification, such as a birth certificate, proof of citizenship or student visa for each child under18 years old.
Divorced parents who share custody of their children should carry copies of the legal custody documents. Adults who are not parents or guardians must have written permission from the parents or guardians to accompany the children.
When travelling with a group of vehicles, parents or guardians should travel in the same vehicle as the children for border crossing.
Customs officers are often looking for missing children and may ask questions about the children who are travelling with you.
3. New U.S. passport rules will come into effect soon.

Yes, but only if you are an American citizen or permanent resident.

U.S. citizens travelling between the U.S. and Canada by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid U.S. passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security.
5. Where can American travellers get a U.S. passport?
First-time passport applicants need to apply in person to one of 7,000 passport acceptance facilities located throughout the United States.
Applicants should bring two regulation size photographs of themselves, proof of U.S. citizenship and a valid form of photo identification, such as a driver's license.
U.S. passport renewals can be done by mail if the recent passport is available to submit is not damaged, was issued within the past 15 years and you were over age 16 when it was issued.
Applicants must either still have the same last name, or can show legal proof of name change.
